Buds in pairs

SYCAMORE

Acer pseudoplatanus

Buds opposite with green scales

FIELD MAPLE

Acer campestre

Buds opposite, hairy, grey-brown,

SILVER MAPLE

Acer saccharinum

Red stems, buds red/green, in pairs.

ELDER

Sambucus nigra

Twig green. Buds opposite, brown. Often green tips as they may leaf early.

ASH

Fraxinus excelsior

Buds cone like black, opposite. Twig swollen at tip.

HORSE CHESTNUT 

Aesculus hippocastanum

Large sticky buds, red-brown. leaf scar like horseshoe with nail holes.

PURGING BUCKTHORN

Rhamnus cathartica

Buds officially in pairs, although occasionally one bud may slip down below the other.

DOGWOOD

Cornus sanguinea.

Buds in pairs, stem red in light, green in shade.

GUELDER ROSE

Viburnum opulus

Stem angular, buds opposite.

Buds red-brown, cone like, appear grey due to hairs. The grey hairs rub off.

Buds bunched at tip of shoot. Light brown.

TURKEY OAK

Quercus cerris

Grey, hairy twigs. Buds with twisting whiskers.

Fagus sylvatica

Shoot slightly zigzag long pointed buds, angled from twig.

HORNBEAM

Shoot slightly zigzag but with short buds, lying close to twig

SILVER BIRCH

Betula pendula

Thin twigs, rough to the touch. Small buds, dark brown.

COMMON ALDER

Alnus glutinosa

Buds stalked, with a mauve bloom.

Male catkins wine red.

HAWTHORN or MAY

Thorns along stem and at ends of branches. Occasional berry may be retained.
