Grass Snake

Natrix helvetica

Grass snakes are the largest snakes found in Britain and are commonly observed in Hainault Forest from April to October. They can sometimes be seen in grasslands or swimming in Hainault Lake. These snakes enjoy basking in the sun and are easily recognised by their yellow neck collar. Their diet consists of amphibians, fish, small mammals, and birds. Grass snakes pose no danger to humans and typically slither away quickly if they are disturbed.
