Field Grasshopper

Chorthippus brunneus

This common species measures between 15 to 25 mm in length, and has variable colouration. It prefers short vegetation in dry, sunny locations. Striped and mottled variations exist, with body colour ranging from buff to orange to purple. The lines on the shoulders are deeply indented, and the underside of the body is notably hairy. This species has wings, is capable of flying well, and is known to swarm. Its sound consists of a series of short, soft buzzes. As a herbivore, it primarily feeds on grass. Eggs are deposited in the soil. Nymphs hatch from late March, while adults typically emerge from June and may survive until early December.
