Split Gill Fungus
Schizophyllum commune
This bracket fungus typically develops on dead wood from deciduous trees. The fans, which are centrally attached and very hairy, measure 1–5 cm in diameter and become leathery as they mature. The name of the fungus is derived from the radial gill-like folds located beneath the cap, which are split at the centre. Fairly common in Hainault Forest.
