Orange-tip
Anthocharis cardamines
The Orange-tip butterfly inhabits hedgerows, damp meadows and woodland rides, from April until June. It has one generation a year and overwinters as a pupa. The adults are often seen on cruciferous plants such as garlic mustard, cuckoo flower and charlock. Males are distinguished by orange visible when the wings are open; orange is absent on the wings of females. Both sexes have black and white chequering along the wing edges and mottled green underwings.
