Dead Man's Penny
Bronze memorial plaques about 120mm (4.7in) in diameter, often known as "Dead Man's Pennies", were issued to next of kin of British and Empire service personnel who died as a result of the First World War. The plaques featured the figure of Britannia with a lion and carried the words: "HE DIED FOR FREEDOM AND HONOVR". The plaque also contained the decease's name. Approximately 1,355,000 plaques were issued, made from a total of 450 tonnes of bronze. They were sent to families with a commemorative letter and scroll from King George.
