Hainault Forest is a Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI), which means that any work must receive approval from the relevant environmental authorities. A field, covered in nettles, was subsequently assessed by a team of ecologists, archaeologists, and tree surgeons to determine the feasibility of constructing water storage basins in that area. The procedure included the removal of a layer of topsoil. Archaeologists discovered minimal items of historical significance, aside from an old rubble pathway, once part of an allotment. The Retreat Path was closed, and work commenced after permission was granted. Barriers were installed around the trees to ensure their protection before the arrival of heavy machinery.
