Builder and Councillor, W.P Griggs, erected a Clock Tower made of Portland stone at Ilford Broadway in 1901 as a gift to the town. It had a weather vane at the top and a drinking fountain below, and became a popular meeting place. In 1923, due to tramway improvements, the Clock Tower relocated to South Park, where it was destroyed by a German V2 rocket during World War II.
