Crows are opportunists and usually go for easy food. Their natural diet mainly consists of nuts, seeds, fruit, grains, insects and rubbish left behind by humans. They also feed on roadkill which is why they are referred to as 'Carrion' Crows.

This picture shows a crow with a frog. Many predators avoid toads because they secrete toxins from the body when threatened. However, Crows feed on them too having learned to avoid the poisonous glands by flipping a toad onto its back to reveal the soft and edible undersides.

Crows sometimes fish for Swan mussels, a task made easier when the water level drops in the lake due to dry weather. To access the flesh the mussel is dropped from a height of about 5 metres onto a hard surface to break the shell.
