Chironomus

Non-biting Midges are very common and sometimes appear in large swarms. The larvae of are known as 'Bloodworms'. Adults grow to 13mm long and males have feather-like antennae. The different species of Chironomus can only be identified by expect examination and even the experts can struggle at times. These are generally recorded to Genus only.
