Calliphora vomitoria

This is an orange-bearded blowfly with a shiny blue body larger than the average housefly. Adults feed on nectar and females deposit their eggs on rotting meat. Forensic scientists can normally establish the rough time of death of a corpse by studying blowfly eggs and maggots. These flies usually fly in packs allowing them to find food sources more efficiently. When one detects food it releases a pheromone alerting others. Thank you to Del Smith for the identification.
