1841. Beasts were often made to carry or pull loads much heavier than what would normally be considered reasonable. Accounts of animals being mistreated were reported to the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals. One newspaper report said that many carriages were so overloaded that they would be more suitable being pulled by mastodons!
