Venison for the King

Historically, the area was part of the extensive medieval Forest of Essex and received legal recognition as a royal forest in the 12th century. According to medieval Forest Law, the land was owned by the Crown, with hunting rights for deer granted solely to the King. The woodland served to supply venison for the royal table. This engraving from 1800 shows a fallow buck that has been felled by an archer's arrow near the Fairlop Oak.
