Greater Knapweed

Centaurea scabiosa

Greater knapweed blooms from June to September. It is not a common plant in Hainault Forest, although can occasionally be found growing beside woodland paths. The large, composite flower-heads have ragged florets around the edge which are sterile, their purpose is to attract insects. The smaller, densely packed florets in the centre are fertile.
