Cattle Pound
By 1903, the practice grazing domestic animals at Lambourne End stopped after many centuries of traditional use by the local community. By the turn of the century, few individuals were using the woodland in this manner. Those who disregarded the grazing ban had their animals confined in a specially constructed pound located in the car park opposite the Beehive public house (now the Miller and Carter). Owners of impounded animals were required to pay a fine for each animal to secure their release. Unclaimed animals would be sold at Market. The pound still exists, however the gate has gone missing since this picture was taken.
