Old Hainault Oak
Public House
The Old Hainault Oak Public House was part of the Ind Coope chain. Pubs in Essex mainly sourced their beer from the Star Brewery in Romford, which served as the company's original base. The pub was small, with the bar only a few steps from the entrance. The men's toilets did not have a roof and were located to the right of the building. An off license on the opposite side allowed children to purchase soft drinks like R. White's cream soda or Tizer. A deposit was required, which was refunded when the bottles were returned. There was a limited choice of crisps; ready salted, cheese and onion, or salt and vinegar. The original pub was demolished in 1971, to be replaced with a new building. Rosemarie Khan, nee Small, the artist that produced this picture, lived in a cottage at the top of New North Road in the late 1960s.
