Bluish-black Silverhorn

Mystacides azurea

Adults measure approximately 6 to 9 mm in length and possess bluish-black wings that feature a notable fold at the tips, giving the rear of the wing an angular appearance when seen from above. The antennae are exceptionally long, roughly twice the length of the body. Males have larger eyes compared to females and have distinctively large, hairy facial palps. This species is found at Hainault Lake and the forest ponds from May to September. Mystacides nigra is a similar species, but that has matte black wings.
