Elephant Hawk-moth

Deilephila elpenor

This spectacular species flies from May to August. It was given its common name because its large caterpillars, up to 70 cm long,  somewhat resemble an elephant's trunk with two large eye spots. The caterpillars feed on willowherbs, bedstraws and fuschia.
