Hornet Moth
Sesia apiformis
This species resembles a true hornet in size but has a yellower appearance and does not have a wasp-waist. Adults may be found resting on poplar trunks shortly after emerging, typically in the early morning during cool, cloudy days in June or July. The larvae, which overwinter two or three times, feed on poplar and aspen trees. This moth belongs to a group known as clearwing moths, day-flying moths that have transparent, mostly scale-free wings.
