Chinese Character

Cilix glaucata

Fine silvery markings on this tiny species are said to resemble a character in the Chinese alphabet, leading to its common name. Its colouration provides effective camouflage. When at rest, with its head concealed under its thorax and its legs tucked beneath its wings, the moth resembles a bird dropping. Its larvae feed on blackthorn, hawthorn and crab apple.
