Stag Beetle

Stag beetles are the UK's largest beetle species. They have fallen into decline due to dead wood habitats disappearing. Males have enlarged antler-like jaws, hence the name 'Stag'. The antler-wielding males may look fearsome but they are harmless to humans. Larvae live below ground feeding on decaying wood before emerging as adults. (Female shown above).
