Great Crested Newt
Triturus cristatus
The London Amphibian Group and Redbridge Vision conducted a licensed search for Great Crested Newts at Fairlop Waters and the Cycling Centre. This species, which is the largest newt in Britain, can measure up to 17 cm in length. Newts are amphibians that breed in clean ponds during spring. Most of the year they feed on invertebrates found in woodland, hedgerows, marshes, and grassland. During winter they typically hibernate underground often amongst tree roots.
