Canada Goose
Branta canadensis
Multiple broods of goslings come together to form a large flock instead of individual pairs of parents constantly monitoring their own young. A few adult geese, typically the more experienced parents, assume the responsibility of supervising and protecting the entire group. This arrangement allows the other parents to forage for food, rest, or maintain a watch on the outer edges of the flock. This cooperative babysitting strategy is frequently observed during the spring and early summer breeding season.
