Garden Spider
Araneus diadematus
During late summer or autumn, the females produce a specialised, durable, egg sac. These sacs are concealed in sheltered locations. The female leaves her orb-web to protect this egg sac until her death, allowing the eggs to overwinter. When the spiderlings emerge in the spring, they may remain together for a brief period in a small communal web that acts as a temporary nest before they disperse.
