2. FAIRLOP OAK
A drawing of the oak from 1790.
The trunk of the Fairlop Oak had a circumference of over 20 metres and a diameter of 6.7 metres and had a hollow recess where six or seven cattle would seek shelter on hot days. Most of its 17 branches had a girth of at least 3.6 metres. When the sun was at its peak, the shadow it cast covered an area roughly the size of two football pitches.
