History:
Under the harsh Forest Laws someone caught poaching or killing the ‘Kings’ Deer would face the death penalty or maiming. Maiming usually meant being blinded or having a hand cut off. During the 13th century, under the reign of King Henry III, fines were introduced instead to be paid to the crown, which became a valuable source of revenue.
