History:
In 1876, Lieutenant-Colonel Henry Holmes, the owner of Hornchurch Brewery. had a crenellated mansion known as 'Grey Towers' built. The building was bought by the Army Council in 1914. It become a military base occupied by the 23rd Royal Fusiliers (1st Sportsman's Battalion), then later, the 26th Middlesex Regiment. Grey Towers became a Convalescent Hospital for New Zealand soldiers in 1916. It had 1,500 beds. The building was demolished in 1931. The driveway that once led to the mansion is now known as 'Grey Towers Avenue' and is lined with houses.
