During the 1890s Ilford started going through a period of rapid expansion. The Bathurst Family moved to 36 Empress Avenue from Surrey. Head of the household Nelson Bathurst was a Post Office telegraph engineer. He was married to Emily. The couple had three daughters and three sons. The three daughters were; Vera, the youngest (born 1902), Mildred, the oldest (born 1894) and Winifred (born 1897). Winifred, aka 'Winnie', attended County High School in Ilford. The sons were Nelson (born 1895), Fergus (born 1899) and Cyril (born 1899).
