Red-tailed Bumblebee 

Bombus lapidarius


A species characterised by significant red marking on the last quarter of the abdomen. Males typically exhibit a red tail and extensive yellow markings on the face and thorax. Queens emerge from hibernation during March with workers appearing from April, and males and new females present from July to early October. Nests are built underground, often in old mammal nests. Populations range from 100 to 300 workers, and the life cycle lasts about 5 to 6 months.
