HISTORY OF ILFORD
Builder and Councillor, W.P Griggs, commissioned a Clock Tower made of Portland stone to be built at Ilford Broadway in 1901 as a gift to the town. There was a weather vane at top and a drinking fountain below. It became a popular meeting place with "I'll meet you by the Clock Tower" becoming a popular saying. Due to tramway improvements the Clock Tower moved to South Park in 1923 where a German V2 rocket would bring it to a untimely end during World War II.
