HISTORY OF ILFORD
The poster is advertising a show at Ilford Hippodrome by comedian Harry Tate. His was born Ronald Macdonald Hutchison, but changed his name for the stage after a suggestion by Marie Lloyd. He adopted his surname from Henry Tate & Sons the sugar refiners where he worked as a clerk. He wore a false moustache, which was used to express all kinds of emotion by twitching or moving it. His act had him as a blustering good-humoured incompetent in control of situations that usually ended up in chaos. The name 'Harry Tate" entered into cockney rhyming slang. Harry Tate' meaning 'state' (i.e. He was in a right Harry Tate!).
